La Clínica del Pueblo is a non-profit clinic located in Washington DC that provides health services to the DC community. It was founded in 1983 to serve many of the Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees escaping war in their home countries. Some other projects I’ve completed for La Clínica include creating all of the collateral for their annual gala, helping with website maintenance, creating their newsletters and their 2006 annual report.

Volviendo a Vivir Logo and Brochure

In 2009 La Clínica del Pueblo, a non-profit community clinic in the DC area, needed to develop a new brochure and identity for a newly launched substance abuse program, Volviendo a Vivir (Begin Anew, New Beginnings). As part of their communications team, I worked with La Clínica’s Substance Abuse Program Manager, Liz Cardenas. The name of the program and slogan were developed by Liz and successful members of La Clínicas past substance abuse program, the brochure was written by Liz and I worked communications assistant Erin Sindewald to improve upon the design and message.

What emerged was a positive and hopeful message from Volviendo a Vivir and tied back into La Clínica del Pueblo’s mission, providing “culturally appropriate health services to persons in the latino community, regardless of the ability to pay.”

The first panel displays the logo’s “sun” in the background, faded and blurred, with a hand reaching out. The first image that is seen when the brochure is opened is the image of the “sun” again, but on this panel it is in full color and bright, along with the first message about the program and an outstretched hand. The full spread further emphasizes both hands, one reaching towards the other from the upper left hand corner, representing the help that is available to help you “begin anew.”

1-800-QuitNow Brochure

While at The Media Network I helped brand a Spanish language anti-tobacco program for Howard County called NuevaMente. After the success of that campaign, we were contacted by 1-800-QuitNow to adapt their English materials, which included creating a new brochure. They had provided some photos for us to use but the resolution of the images made the photographs unusable, so I had to convince them to either hire a professional photographer or we would have to use stock images. The budget did not allow for us to get original photos but I was lucky enough to find a collection of photos with the same models. The client loved the brochure, we got it printed quickly at a good price and hopefully convinced more people to call the quit line.

Epilogue Mastering

Austin based mastering studio Epilogue Mastering needed a quick and efficient way to re-establish their online presence. Quietly building up a client base locally in Austin and by reaching out to musicians via social media websites, Epilogue Mastering approached The Honest Ape with a plan to redesign the company’s MySpace page which would include the creation of a new logo and promotional video.

The MySpace page was completed within a week and included an animated version of the newly created Epilogue Logo. The animated logo was again used in the promotion video, with sound design by The Honest Ape for the logo animation and a comparison of a mastered track and an un-mastered track provided by Epilogue.

Crew54’s “Good Day”

In March of 2009, in support of Killeen based hip hop group Crew54’s song “Good Day”, I created this cover artwork, intended to be used either as the front of the packaging or for digital music players. The design incorporates the soul/gospel feel of the song’s production from California’s Keelay and Zaire and Crew54’s lyrics.

In February of 2009, in support of Austin based hip hop group Southbound’s song “That Ain’t Right”, I created this cover artwork, intended to be used either as the front of the packaging or for digital music players. The design reflects the songs content and incorporates the chorus, which says:

“Everybody wants to be what they see on that TV screen, but that ain’t life, the mansions and the money, no that ain’t like how they really living.”

In November of 2009, a video for the song premiered online, directed by Austin based stuidio Luxury Mindz. Watch the video for “That Ain’t Right”

Heavyweight Champion

In support of Poise’s first single off his latest album I created a flyer, a set of posters and a promotional video for the video release party. The original video that was planned was scrapped a few years ago and finally a video for the song has seen the light of day. I used the same typeface and colors as the original poster for the video shoot, but I improved on it with a few more details to be able to translate it better to video.

NuevaMente Anti-Smoking Campaign

In 2008, while at The Media Network, I worked on creating a Spanish-language anti-smoking campaign in Howard County, Maryland. Our only direction was to go along with the “Happy, Healthy, Howard” slogan that the county had in place, so I worked with the staff at The Media Network to create a name, logo, slogan, poster and bumper sticker for the program. We did not have a huge budget to, so we had to make the most of our time and money.

The age range of our target audience was broad but we were targeting those who were already thinking about giving up tobacco and the program that emerged was NuevaMente. In Spanish, nuevamente means “again” but if broken up “nueva” and “mente” mean “new” and “mind” respectively. This program’s name was a great way to emphasize to our audience that despite their past efforts to quit smoking, the resources to help them quit were now closer than ever: local, free and in their language. Telling our audience that there was a new opportunity and to help them think differently about quitting was the perfect message.

Once the program name and slogan was developed everything else pretty much just fell in place and we really did not have to work through too many drafts of the poster and bumper sticker. We presented it to the client at the Howard County Health Department, they loved it and everyone went home happy. You just have to love when that happens.

Checho’s American Dream

In 2007 I collaborated again with Checho and created artwork to accompany his song “American Dream.” I first heard the song when I was still in Austin but I only heard it once or twice but Checho never did anything with it. I decided to ask him to let me post it on Medium, along with some artwork and try and promote the song a bit more.

This is one of the strongest and most honest songs I’ve heard dealing with the issue of immigration, so I took a few symbols of American and Latin culture and mashed them up. Placing the statue of liberty in place of the virgin of guadalupe really emphasized the songs message. Both Checho and I have received great feedback on the song and artwork respectively, check out the original post which includes the song at www.bigbadmedium.com.

Mike and Ike’s “Sunglasses”

I created this cover in order to support the release of Mike and Ike’s single, “Sunglasses.” It’s pretty much just the Mike and Ike logo and a sunglasses illustration.
